Activities from 2002 to 2007
In Year 2002
A public meeting was organized on 5th. June under the aegis of
NEAC sponsored by the Union Ministry of Environment & Forests, and
State Department of Forest & Environment at the Xavier Institute of
Management, Bhubaneswar. This was collaborated by the Project Water,
XIM, and NSS Bureau of the Utkal University. Various competitions
and resource lectures were organized on improvement of slums. A book
entitled ‘Sustainable Development’ in popular Oriya language was
released on the occasion.
The 30th World Environment Day was celebrated on 5th. June by
organizing popular lectures and competitions on the theme, in
collaboration with the Regional Science Centre, Bhubaneswar. Tree
plantation was taken up in the premises of the Centre.
A herbal health camp was organized to popularize medicinal
herbs, and herbal medicines were distributed to 107 patients to mark
the 21st. Foundation Day of the Society on 25th. October. It was
participated with the local vaidyas and ayurvedic doctors.The
programme was collaborated by the Green Life Movement of India, Puri.
In Year 2003
Road Safety Awareness fortnight was organized at Saraswati Sishu
Vidya Mandir, Baramunda and VSS Nagar High School, VSS Nagar,
Bhubaneswar. Cycle Rally on the national highway with placards from
Barmunda Bus Stand up to the Vani Vihar traffic square, competitions
and seminar were organized at both the schools during 10th to 25th
January.
The 31st World Environment Day was observed through various
activities- tree plantation, competition on plants and animals
around us, popular lecture on the theme ‘Water: Two Billion People
are Dying for It’ and quiz based on the lecture, at the Regional
Science Centre, Bhubaneswar on 5th. June. This was a collaborative
programme in association with the Indian Science Congress
Association: Bhubaneswar Chapter, and the Regional Science Centre,
Bhubaneswar.
The NEAC 2002-03 was organized on 5th. June at BDA Nicco Park,
Bhubaneswar in collaboration with the Xavier Institute of
Management, Bhbaneswar. A public meeting on NEAC 2002-03 theme
‘Water: the Elixir of Life’ was also organized. A book in popular
Oriya language on NEAC theme ‘Water: the Elixir of Life’ was
released.
A programme on Popularisation of Science was held on 23rd August
at the Regional Sciene Centre, Bhubaneswar in collaboration with
Orissa Bigyan Academy, National Council of Science & Technology
Communication (NCSTC), and the Regional Science Centre, Bhubaneswar.
Popular lecture on the theme of the National Science Day ’50 years
of DNA & 25 years of IVF’ followed by open house quiz and poster
competitions on ‘Plants and Health Care’ were also organized.
A seminar on ‘Environmental Problems in Orissa’ was organized on
26th. September at Hotel Marrion, Bhubaneswar in collaboration with
Jeeban Surakhya Parishad, Bhubaneswar. Resource lectures and
discussions were imparted by eminent environmental scientists
including a lady scientist from US.
A workshop on ‘Conservation of Chilika Lagoon and Bhitarkanika
Mangrove Swamps’ was organized at Hotel Keshari, Bhubaneswar on the
occasion of the 22nd Foundation Day of the Society on 25th August.
Dr. Ajit Kumar Pattnaik, Chief Executive, Chilika Development
Authority was felicitated on the occasion for his dynamic role in
getting the Ramsar Award for the excellent work done towards
eco-restoration of Chilika through conservation measures.
In Year 2004
Observed Road Safety Week during 5 – 11 January 2004. A public
meeting was organized in IRC Village, Bhubaneswar, and various
competitions were held among the school children. Members of the
Society had a padayatra displaying the placards on road safety.
Collaborated the Indian Science Congress Association:
Bhubaneswar Chapter to hold the round table discussion on the theme
‘Hill Forest Ecosystem and Tribes’.
Organised popular lectures as well as public meeting the theme
‘‘Encouraging Scientific Awareness in the Community’ on the occasion
of the National Science Day on 28th February. Competitions- Sit &
Draw, Essay Writing, and Quiz were also held for school children.
World Forest Day was observed on 21st March. A round table
discussion was organized on the theme “Forests of Orissa: the Future
Scenario”.
The Earth Day was observed on 22nd April. A meeting was
organized in the premises of the Society to discuss on the
environmental problems of Bhubaneswar City. Special emphasis was
given on the protection of the rich heritage of the city.
The 32nd World Environment Day was observed on 5th June in
collaboration with the ISCA: Bhubaneswar Chapter and the Agragamee.
A one-day seminar was organized on the WED 2004 theme “Wanted! Seas
& Oceans: Dead or Alive?” While in the inaugural session speakers
emphasized on the diverse issues confronting the marine ecosystems
and their resource depletion, in the technical session the speakers
presented research findings on the marsh crocodiles of Orissa and
the status of the sharks in the coastal waters of Orissa through
audio-visual presentations.
A book in Oriya language entitled ‘Water for Life’ was released
on 5th June with funds provided through the Centre for Environmental
Studies by the Government of India, Ministry of Environment &
Forests under the National Environment Awareness Campaign programme.
Collaborated with the Indian Science Congress Association and
the Regional Plant Resource Centre to hold the 8th Orissa Bigyan
Congress on 11 – 12, December. In this state level science congress
the activities conducted were: key-note address on the theme ‘Health
Technology as Fulcrum of the Development for Nation’, Panel
discussion on the subject ‘Biotechnology in Human Welfare’, plenary
session on the topic ‘Synergy between Industries and Research
Institutions’, guest lecture on the subject ‘Discovery of Insulin’,
and technical session for presentation of ‘Research Papers’.
Participated in the draft National Environment Policy 2004
exercise organized by the Government of Orissa: Department of Forest
& Environment, at the State Pollution Control Board, Orissa on 16th
October, in Bhubaneswar.
The Society in collaboration with the Agragamee also organized a
one-day workshop separately on the draft Natioanl Environemtn Policy
on 27th November.
In Year 2005
Collaborated the Indian Science Congress Association: Bhubaneswar
Chapter, the
Regional Science Centre, Bhubaneswar, the Capital High School, Orissa
Bigyan Prasar Samiti, Bhubaneswar Branch, and the Jana Priya Bigyan
Mancha to hold the week-long National Science Week from 22 – 28,
February. There were six popular science lectures on different topics,
quiz and sit & draw competitions, followed by prize distribution
ceremony.
The 33rd World Environment Day was observed on 5th June in Bhubaneswar
by organizing public meeting, quiz and essay competitions on the theme
‘Green Cities: Plan for the Planet’. The Society’s website
‘orissaenvironment.com’ was also launched on the occasion. The programme
was collaborated by the Indian Science Congress Association: Bhubaneswar
Chapter.
The National Environment Awareness Campaign was observed on 1st
September through holding of a public meeting, and competitions among
school students (sit & draw, essay, quiz). A publication in Oriya
language on ‘Management of Municipal Solid Waste’ was released on the
occasion. The V.S.S.Nagar High School, Bhubaneswar collaborated the
programme. A compost pit was constructed in VIP Area, IRC Village,
Bhubaneswar.
The 51st Wildlife Week was celebrated by holding competitions
(elocution, sit & draw and essay) among school children, and a public
meeting with popular lectures on wildlife on October 6 – 7 in Bhubaneswar.
The Society collaborated the 9th Orissa Bigyan Congress organized by
the Indian Science Congress Association during December 11 – 12. It was
attended by eminent scientists as resource persons and about 200
scientists as participants. There were panel, plenary, popular lecture,
research paper presentation sessions, felicitations to scientists for
their life time contribution, etc.
In Year 2006
The National Science Day was celebrated on February 28 on the theme
“Nurture Nature for our Future’ in collaboration with the Indian Science
Congress Association Bhubaneswar Chapter, Orissa Bigyan Prachar Samiti
Bhubaneswar Branch, and Government High School, Unit- IX, Bhubaneswar.
The World Forest Day was observed on March 21 through holding of a
workshop on the theme ‘Development Projects and Rural Development’ in
collaboration with ASSETS ORISSA, Research and Analysis Consultants,
Orissa Sponge Iron Manufacturers’ Association and the Indian Science
Congress Association Bhubaneswar Chapter.
The 34th World Environment Day was celebrated on the theme ‘Deserts
and Desertification’ on June 5 by holding public meeting. It was
collaborated by the Project Water, Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, and the Indian Science Congress Association Bhubaneswar
Chapter.
The 52nd Wild Life Week was observed on October 8 in Bhubaneswar by
organizing popular lecture on ‘Wild Life’. It was collaborated by the
Regional Science Centre, Bhubaneswar and the Indian Science Congress
Association Bhubaneswar Cahpter.
Collaborated the 10th Orissa Bigyan Congress organized on November, 4
– 5 by the Indian Science Congress Association Bhubaneswar Chapter at
Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar. There were
panel, plenary, popular lecture, research paper presentation sessions,
felicitations to scientists for their life time contribution, etc.
In Year 2007
Organised popular lecturer on the theme of National Science Day 2007
“More Crop Per Drop of
Water” at Orissa University of Agriculture & Technology on 28th
February. This was a
collaborative programme with the Indian Science Congress Association
Bhubaneswar Chapter.
Organised the visit of an expert team to Mahendragiri Hill Complex for
on-the-spot study of the present status of eco-system during March 11-
15. Also organized a workshop for interaction with the local tribal
people in the area. This was collaborated by the Indian Science Congress
Association Bhubaneswar Chapter and the Centre for Community
Development, Paralakhemundi.
The International Museum Day was celebrated on May 18 by holding art,
essay & quiz competitions on the theme “Museum and World Heritage” in Bhubaneswar. This was collaborated by the Regional Science Centre,
Bhubaneswar.
Organised a seminar on the theme “Socio-Cultural & Biological
Dimensions of Mahendragiri Hill Complex” coinciding with the 35th World
Environment Day celebration on 5th June at IMAGE, Bhubaneswar. This was
collaborated by Indian Science Congress Association Bhubaneswar Chapter
and sponsored by Anthropological Survey of India, Government of India.
Participated in the National Environment Awareness Campaign 2006-07
and published a book in Oriya language on the theme “Solid Waste
Management”. The book was released on 5th June, the World Environment
Day. This was sponsored by Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government
of India.
Observed the 53rd Wildlife Week on 1- 3 October at the Regional
Science Centre, Bhubaneswar through holding essay writing, elocution and
sit & draw competitions. The themes were “Conservation of Natural
Habitat, Non-Violence on Wildlife and Save Elephant- the Pride of
India”.
Organised a programme on the theme “Snake- Myth & Realities” at
University High School, Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar and held elocution
competition among school children. This was organized in collaboration
with Bigyan Prachar Samity, Bhubaneswar Branch, Indian Science Congress
Association Bhubaneswar Chapter and Vasundhara on 11th October.
Organised popular talk on ‘Geoscience & Environment’ at Geological
Survey of India, Bhubaneswar on 12th October in collaboration with the
Geo-Club and Indian Science Congress Association Bhubaneswar Chapter.
Organised essay, elocution and art competitions among disabled
children at Cuttack in collaboration with Sankranti Sanskrutika Parishad
on 12th -14th October.
Organised Silver Jubilee Celebration of the Society at Jayadev Bhawan,
Bhubaneswar on 30th October by holding a public meeting. The Founder
Members and eminent personalities were felicitated. Prises were
distributed to students for participation in various competitions held
earlier for the occasion on ‘Environment & Natural Resources’. A
souvenir was also released .
